Expected WBCS Prelims 2026 Exam Date
While an official notification for WBCS Prelims 2026 hasn't been released yet, based on recent trends and the WBPSC's annual calendar, the WBCS Preliminary Examination is generally expected to be conducted around September to December 2026. For example, the WBCS (Executive) Preliminary Examination 2024 is scheduled for September 7, 2025. Candidates should regularly check the official WBPSC website (wbpsc.gov.in) for the most accurate and updated information regarding exam dates.
The West Bengal Public Service Commission (WBPSC) has introduced a new scheme and syllabus for the WBCS examination, which is expected to be implemented from the 2025 cycle onwards and thus applicable for WBCS Prelims 2026. The revised pattern generally aligns more with the UPSC Civil Services Examination.
Preliminary Examination Pattern
The WBCS Prelims is a screening test and its marks are not considered for the final merit list. The updated pattern now includes two objective-type papers:
General Studies Paper-I: This paper will carry 200 marks and consist of 200 multiple-choice questions (MCQs). The duration will be 2 hours.
Subjects covered:
English Composition
General Science
Current Events of National & International Importance
History of India
Geography of India (with special reference to West Bengal)
Indian Polity and Economy
Indian National Movement
General Mental Ability
General Issues on Environmental Ecology, Bio-Diversity and Climate Change
General Studies Paper-II (Aptitude Paper): This paper will also carry 200 marks and consist of 200 MCQs. The duration will be 2 hours. This paper is qualifying in nature, meaning candidates need to score a minimum percentage (to be specified by WBPSC) to qualify for the Mains, but its marks won't be added to the overall prelims score for ranking.
Subjects covered:
Comprehension
Interpersonal Skills (including communication skills)
Logical Reasoning and Analytical Ability
Decision Making and Problem Solving
General Mental Ability
Basic Numeracy (Class X level)
Data Interpretation (charts, graphs, tables, data sufficiency etc. - Class X level)
The aim of these changes is to bring the WBCS exam more in line with national-level competitive examinations, emphasizing both general knowledge and aptitude.
